Heart of a Warrior Charitable Foundation

The Heart of a Warrior Charitable Foundation supports underserved children in North Texas through enrichment programs that are educational, cultural, and life enhancing.

The HOAW Foundation's signature project is the Young Warriors Summer Learning Program, an eight-week summer academic enrichment program that provides a safe, healthy environment while helping students improve their math, science and language skills. The program also gives the students practical training in Spanish, volunteerism and general life skills.

The goal of the Young Warrior Summer Learning Program is to reduce the learning gap often seen in children that do not have access to quality learning programs during the summer.

  • According to research led by Duke University and Johns Hopkins University, programs like the Young Warriors Summer Learning program fulfill a critical need:

  • By the time they enter ninth grade, low-income students fell nearly three grade levels behind middle- and upper-income kids.

  • Summer learning loss is to blame for roughly two-thirds of the academic achievement gap separating income groups.

  • The average student loses about a month of progress in math skills each summer, while low-income students may slip three months or more in reading comprehension or similar skills.
